Advantages and disadvantages of artificial quartz stone countertops

Artificial quartz countertops are composite materials formed by vacuum high-pressure molding of over 90% natural quartz sand, resin, pigments, etc., combining the texture of natural stone with the stability of artificial materials. They have become the mainstream choice for kitchen countertops in Chinese households. Its performance is significantly affected by material purity, thickness, and installation process, and requires a rational understanding of its advantages and limitations.

Core advantages: high durability and low maintenance costs

Extremely wear-resistant and scratch resistant: The Mohs hardness reaches 6-7 levels, far exceeding daily tools such as kitchen knives and spatulas. Under normal use, there are almost no scratches left, making it suitable for high-frequency cooking environments.

Non porous, dense and anti-seepage: The water absorption rate is less than 0.2%. If dark liquids such as soy sauce, vinegar, curry are cleaned in time, they will not penetrate the interior and avoid yellowing and discoloration.

Stain resistant and easy to clean: The surface has been polished for more than 30 times, making it as smooth as a mirror. It only needs to be wiped with a damp cloth in daily life to restore cleanliness, without the need for sealing maintenance.

Environmentally friendly, safe, and radiation free: meets the Class A standard of GB 6566-2010 "Limits for Radionuclides in Building Materials", can directly come into contact with food, and has no risk of heavy metal precipitation.

Rich color and texture: can simulate natural marble patterns, providing hundreds of colors and particle effects to meet the diverse aesthetic needs of modern homes.

Technical support: According to JG/T 463-2014 "Artificial Quartz Stone slabs for Building Decoration" standard, the qualified product has a bending strength of ≥ 34MPa to ensure structural stability.

Main drawback: Clear boundaries of usage scenarios

Limited heat resistance: Although quartz sand has a high melting point, the resin matrix may soften, discolor, or burn at sustained high temperatures (>150 ℃). It is forbidden to directly place freshly cooked hot pots, rice cookers, or baking pans, and a pot mat must be used.

Brittle and prone to cracking: Weak impact resistance, easy to crack due to heavy objects falling (such as iron pots, stone mortar) or local stress (such as suspended countertops without pads), especially for inferior boards with a thickness of less than 20mm.

Visible seams during splicing: Due to the inability to form through hot bending, long countertops need to be spliced. Even with exquisite craftsmanship, the seams may still turn black due to adhesive aging and accumulated stains, affecting aesthetics.

Damaged and difficult to repair: Once there are broken edges or cracks, it is impossible to polish and repair them like acrylic artificial stone, usually requiring a complete replacement and high repair costs.

High price: The price range for high-quality products is 800-2000 yuan/linear meter, which is much higher than that of ordinary artificial stone. Low end products (<500 yuan/linear meter) are often mixed with calcium powder and prone to cracking and color bleeding.

User feedback: Consumers in Linyi, Qingdao and other places have reported that some low-priced countertops have "soy sauce bleeding" and "stove edge cracking" after 6-12 months of use, mainly due to quartz sand content<85%, thickness of only 15mm, and installation without padding.

Key Pit Avoidance Guide for Selection and Installation

|Risk point | Correct approach|

|Thickness selection | Must be 20mm or above, 15mm is a poor quality threshold, and its load-bearing and crack resistance are seriously insufficient|

|Quartz content | Require merchants to provide testing reports. Quartz sand content ≥ 90%, can be tested with a key: genuine products have no trace, counterfeit products leave blank|

|Installation process | The openings of the sink and stove must be treated with R-angle arcs, and a whole density board pad must be laid at the bottom of the countertop. It is strictly prohibited to only pad with wooden strips|

|Seam treatment | Priority should be given to V-shaped splicing+specialized glue+fine polishing process to ensure that the seam is ≤ 0.1mm and avoid the hidden danger of "black seam"|

|Color preference | Avoid pure white and light gray large particle styles, which are prone to stains; Recommend dark, matte, and fine grain styles that are resistant to dirt and have a strong sense of luxury|

|Anti counterfeiting verification | Dripping white vinegar on the table: genuine products have no bubbles, while counterfeit products will violently bubble due to the presence of calcium carbonate|

Applicable scenarios and alternative suggestions

Recommended use: Kitchen countertop, island countertop, bar counter, window sill, laboratory countertop - heavy cleaning, light impact scenes.

Use with caution: Chinese style stir fry kitchens that require frequent bone chopping and heavy object impact, or bathroom countertops that require irregular curved surface design.

Alternative solution:

Rock slab: It has stronger heat resistance (can directly heat the pot), no seams, and higher hardness, but it is 30% -50% more expensive and prone to stress cracking when jointed.

Stainless steel: seamless, heat-resistant, easy to clean, suitable for professional kitchens, but prone to fingerprints and loud noise.
